What documents do I need to bring for a cruise?

The simple answer is your passport and cruise boarding pass. Now, officially, if you have booked a closed-loop cruise (one that originates and concludes in the United States), a passport is not required. You could use your official birth certificate with a raised seal. However, after 25 cruises and 20+ years of cruising experience, I strongly recommend always cruising with a passport book.

If there is a medical or family emergency during your cruise, a passport will likely require you to travel home separately from the cruise ship. Be prepared. Yes, a passport is an investment, but it’s worth it!

How early should I arrive at the port before the cruise departure?

Most cruise lines schedule staggered arrival times. This is usually part of your online check-in procedure. During this check-in process, you can schedule an arrival time or have one assigned to you. There are different schools of thought regarding the best arrival time, and it may depend on your travel plans.

I like to select the earliest arrival time available because we travel to the embarkation port a day early. You’ve paid for the first day of your cruise; you might as well get started early! Others feel that a later arrival is less crowded and more relaxed. Either way, it’s cruise day!

What is the best time of year to go on a cruise?

The time that you can cruise! In all honesty, there are pros and cons to all timelines. If you choose to cruise during the summer, you may encounter more children and higher prices. If you cruise in the fall, you may have few kids but a higher risk of hurricane activity.

The best time to cruise may also depend on your itinerary. For example, the Alaska cruising season typically runs from April through September. Maybe you are traveling with kids and must plan for an upcoming school break. Plan to cruise when you are available and book as far in advance as possible for your situation.

What are the most popular cruise destinations?

For cruises originating in the United States, the most popular cruise destination is the Caribbean. Cruise lines offer sailings to the Eastern, Western, and Southern Caribbean islands and frequent stops in the Bahamas.

Here are a few popular examples from each region. Specific itineraries will vary by cruise line and sailings.

Eastern – Typically includes visiting the Bahamas and St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Kitts, etc.

Western – This itinerary might include Cozumel or Costa Maya, Mexico or Grand Cayman, and Jamaica.

Southern – itineraries may include San Juan, Aruba, Bonaire, or Curacao.

What is included in the cruise fare?

This varies by cruise line, but in most cases, these are things that are included in your base cruise fare. Dining in the main dining room and in the buffet. Included beverages are typically brewed coffee, tea, and lemonade/juice.

Also included in your cruise fare are production shows, fitness centers (classes may cost extra), pool & towel services, cabin service and room accommodations, and travel to wonderful ports of call.

How much should I budget for additional onboard expenses?

Budgeting for additional expenses can be tricky. There are some standard “extras” you may want to account for and others that depend on your shopping/spending interests. Typical expenses include your daily gratuities, not-included food and drinks purchases, casino funds, photos or specialty experiences such as tours or activities.

While not an “onboard expense,” port day expenses should be accounted for in your budget.

What activities and entertainment options are available on the ship?

Modern cruise ships have become known for their incredible onboard entertainment. Cruisers can experience Broadway-style shows, comedians, ice skating shows, Aqua shows, and more! Check your pre-cruise planner for details because some of the shows require or encourage reservations.

Are there age restrictions or special programs for children?

Yes! Cruise lines have very popular children’s programs and activities! Adventure Ocean (Royal Caribbean) and Camp Ocean (Carnival), and others are typically rigid about the age ranges for their children’s programs. Staff are highly qualified, and programming is geared toward the age range groups. Most programming is available to children and teens 3-17.

If you are interested in the onboard activities for your children, taking them on embarkation day (day 1 of your cruise) is recommended. This allows them to check their comfort level early and make friends. These popular programs can also become full, so it’s best to get an early start on all of the fun.

What dining options are available on the ship?

Cruise lines offer a variety of included and upcharge dining options on board. The cruise line app will indicate those with an upcharge, typically with a “$” next to the name. Many times the upcharge restaurants are available at a flat fee. As a standard of the industry, the main dining room and primary buffet are included in your cruise fare.

Newer and larger ships, like Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas and Odyssey of the Seas, offer onboard included and upcharge dining options. You will not go hungry on a cruise!

Room service is also available throughout your cruise and may require a small fee.

What is the dress code for dining onboard?

Each cruise line has a posted dress code on its site. However, cruise ships are generally much more casual than they were a decade ago. The ship will likely host 1-2 “formal nights” for a seven-day sailing. “Formal” is at your discretion, and many have changed their wording to “dress your best” or “elegant night.”

In other words, dress up to your own comfort level. However, most cruise lines do prohibit swimwear in the dining venues. Check out some of my favorite items to pack here.

Can I bring my own alcohol onboard?

Many cruise lines have a strict alcohol policy. You should check your specific cruise line policy before bringing alcohol with you. Most cruise lines allow a limited number of wine or champagne packed in your carry-on during embarkation. Alcohol should not be packed in your checked bags when you board the ship at the cruise terminal.

What should I pack for a cruise vacation?

Packing for a cruise can be overwhelming for many new cruisers, but it’s not as complicated as it may seem. If you are booked on a warm-weather cruise, most items you pack will resemble a land vacation. You will likely want to pack swimwear, beach or active wear, and nicer outfits for dinner and evening activities.

I think where the bigger packing difference lies is what you should bring for your stateroom (cruise cabin). Unless you are splurging on a suite, cruise cabins are very small. Maximizing your space will be quite helpful. You will likely want to pack your own toiletries and maybe even a travel hair dryer.

Here are a few lists to help you out, and subscribe for more helpful cruise tips.

Are there laundry facilities available on the ship?

Self-service laundry facilities are not common on cruise ships. There are exceptions to this, so you’ll want to research your specific cruise ship, not just the cruise line company. It’s also important to note that travel irons and steamers are not allowed onboard. If you bring these items, they will be taken and returned to you at the end of the cruise. Trust me, Downy Wrinkle Release and wrinkle-resistant clothing items will become your cruising staples.

Cruise lines offer paid laundry services and are priced per item or bag. Watch the daily planner for laundry specials usually offered mid-cruise. Additionally, pressing services is also available for a fee.

How do I book shore excursions?

There are many ways to book shore excursions for your upcoming cruise. Many first-time cruisers like to book their port day activities through the cruise line. While the selection may be limited and the price may be higher, there is comfort in knowing that the cruise line has vetted the excursion companies and guarantees an on-time ship return. Knowing you must return to the ship by the all-aboard time is critical as a first-time cruiser. The ship will not wait for you!

There are many options outside of the sponsored cruise line activities. Many cruisers start researching on Pinterest or Facebook Groups for recommendations and book with third-party providers such as Viator. You can even find many options with a “guarantee” for an on-time ship return.

Can I use my cell phone on the cruise ship?

Yes, but you must be in airplane mode! Once in airplane mode, you can safely use your phone to take pictures and video. If you have an internet package, or it’s included in your cruise fare, you can safely surf your favorite sites and post to social media. Be sure to tag @finding_jillian so I can see your cruise adventures!

Is there internet access available onboard?

Yes! Internet is available (usually for purchase). Internet may be included in your cruise fare but is typically purchased by day or for the duration of your cruise. If you plan to purchase an internet package, do so before your trip. Prices will be higher on board, so take advantage of any pre-cruise sales.

Internet quality varies by cruise line, ship, and even sailing. However, internet reliability continues to improve, and many ships are converting to Starlink service. As someone who maintains this site even while cruising, I am excited about the improved quality of service onboard.

Are gratuities included in the cruise fare?

Sometimes. Certain cruise lines, such as Virgin Voyages, include daily gratuities in their cruise fare. Most charge gratuities to your onboard account daily. The current average cost is $16-18 per person/day, but many have raised or are raising the price of the daily gratuities.

For a more all-inclusive experience, you can pre-pay your daily gratuities. This will be an option, or ask your travel advisor during your payment process.

What are the cancellation and refund policies?

Travel, including cruise vacations, can be quite expensive. Cancellation and refund policies can be quite complex. ALWAYS read your cruise contract and purchase and review your travel insurance coverage. If possible, purchase your travel insurance within two weeks of your initial deposit date, or invest in an annual travel plan if you travel multiple times a year.

Are there any medical facilities or services available on the ship?

Yes! Unfortunately, we learned much more about the medical facilities onboard during Covid. There are fully equipped medical facilities and staff onboard to help you if you are in need. Your home insurance will not cover these services and will be billed to your onboard account. Travel insurance is a great safety net for these unexpected (sometimes critical) services.

For minor issues, you should travel with a small amount of everyday medical fixes, including pain reliever, stomach relief, and always travel with extra prescription medications.

What is the check-in process at the port?

You’ll want to complete your online check ahead of time (on the cruise line website or their app) and then arrive at the cruise port at your designated time. You will need your boarding pass (printed or in the app) and your passport (or official birth certificate). If you’re relying on the app, you may want to take a screenshot in case of any connectivity issues inside the cruise terminal. Cruise lines do not require proof of vaccination or negative Covid tests. However, if the pandemic taught us anything, things can change quickly.

Pro Tip: Take a moment to stop for your embarkation day photo. There is no pressure to buy it, but it’s available later in the cruise if you want to purchase this fun souvenir. Your embarkation day photo often has the ship, sail dates, and itinerary of your sailing. It’s a great souvenir.

Can I bring food or snacks onboard?

Of course! Many families traveling with small children like to bring a few favorite treats onboard. Ok, adults, too. However, it isn’t necessary to bring snacks. Most modern cruise ships provide access to food/snacks throughout the day. Some may be available at a poolside eatery, buffet, or cafe.

It’s important to note that many port authorities will not allow perishable items (including fruit) on and off the ship. If you’d like to bring snacks, please stick to pre-packaged favorites.

Are there any special events or themed cruises?

Of course! If you are obsessed with anything from Star Wars to The Golden Girls and New Kids on the Block, you’re in luck! Start by googling your area of interest, followed by “themed cruise,” to see what is available.

What is the size and layout of the cabins?

In a word, small. 😉 Cruise cabins are pretty small unless you are splurging on a suite. However, they usually have many smart storage options, and there is much to do outside your small cruise cabin! How do I handle seasickness on a cruise?

Many first-time cruisers are very worried about becoming sick. It can happen but shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying your cruise. Many safe options are available, and you may not even need them. Popular options include Bonine, pressure point Sea Bands wristbands, and the Relief Band. If you are predisposed to motion sickness, you may want to talk to your doctor about a sea sickness patch. Crew members also swear by snacking on green apples or ginger chews for mild cases.

What is the process for disembarkation at the end of the cruise?

When it comes time to pack up and head home, cruising has some key differences. Unless you carry your luggage off the cruise, you will select or be assigned a departure time. You will also be provided luggage tags, and you will set your large luggage (tagged) outside your door on the last night of your cruise. You’ll want to keep any clothing or toiletries you will need for your final morning with you! Guests are invited to depart the ship when their group number is called.

Oh, what a sad day! Time to book another cruise!
