Seavenger Snorkel Gear – An Honest Review

Sharing is caring!

While on a cruise port day visit to the beautiful island of Barbados, I discovered a new love.  I discovered that I love snorkeling! The world below the ocean surface just had me mesmerized.  I could not wait to learn more and become better – through lots of practice! Enter Seavenger Snorkel gear!

As chance would have it, we made contact with a company called Seavenger who sent Brian and I each a snorkel set to try out on our cruise. Thanks, Seavenger! title image of Seavenger snorkel gear review

We were SO excited to try out our gear during our Western Caribbean sailing on the Allure of the Seas.  One of the cruise ports of call was in Roatan, Honduras.  Researching this port in preparation for our trip,  I learned that you could access the MesoAmerican Reef right off of the beach! Since we were traveling with extended family, it was important that we would be able to snorkel while part of our group stayed relaxing on the beach.

Disclaimer:  This is not a paid post and all product opinions are my own.  In full disclosure, Seavenger did send us two sets of snorkel gear for our personal use and review.  As always, you will receive nothing but my 100% honest thoughts on this and every product or service I review on FindingJillian.com.  My full disclosure policy is available here.

Today I am sharing with you our thoughts on the Seavenger Snorkel gear featuring the Seavenger Aviator set and the Seavenger Voyager set.  It’s important to know that both Brian and I are novice snorkelers.  We have snorkeled a couple of times over the years but by no means are we “experienced.”

My review is intended for those who are new to snorkeling or ready to give it a try! With this in mind, I will stick to our overall experience and impressions instead of technical specs such as purge valves, etc.  But of course, you can find that information and more at Seavenger.com

Things we really liked about the Seavenger Snorkel Gear

Compact and Travel-Friendly

We had purchased inexpensive snorkeling sets from Costco years ago but it never seemed to make it into our suitcase when we traveled.  We felt like it took up too much suitcase space!  After using the same mouthpiece as tons of other people in Barbados after being briefly soaked in a mystery solution…we decided we needed to make bringing our own a priority!

The Seavenger snorkel set was easy to pack.  The compact flippers not only work great, but they make a difference when packing.  Everything fit so nicely into the carrying case and then into our luggage.Finding Jillian holding Seavenger snorkel gear bag

Speaking of the Seavenger Carrying Case

Brian and I argued a bit over this one because our carrying bags were different and we liked them both for different reasons.

He claimed the Size large, Seavenger Voyager set which came with a zippered gear bag.  The carrying case on the Voyager set was SO easy to carry and manage.  I was a little jealous of the strap.

The set that I used, the Seavenger Aviator,  had a sturdy mesh bag that kept everything together.  It was compact and super easy to rinse off in the shower after use.  The mesh bag also made it very convenient to hang and dry. I loved the mesh bag because it was multipurpose…but the drawstring style was not as comfortable for me to carry.

Seavenger Snorkel Gear Color Options!

Now don’t laugh, but products with color options make me so happy.  It honestly brings me joy to have a pink accent color on my snorkel gear.  And why not?  We all have our own personalities and color helps us express that.

To quote the amazing Julia Roberts in the classic, Steel Magnolias, “Pink is my signature color”.

Compact and Travel-Friendly Fins

Ok…first of all, we both looked ridiculous in our fins!  In our previous snorkeling experience, fins weren’t allowed.  And..as I mentioned the Costco set from years past never made it into the suitcase.  So, we’ve never actually used fins.

Instead of carrying them into the water and putting them on (like intelligent souls) we put them on at the beach and tried to make our way into the water.  Ha!!!!  I’m sure some tourists took a souvenir snapshot of that ridiculous situation.

But…after we made our way into the water and started using the fins as they were intended, we both were thrilled with the fins.  They fit perfectly and were very comfortable.  The fins never slipped but were super easy to remove once we were done.

Non-Pro Tip: Check out these inflatable snorkel vests on Amazon.  Even though we are decent swimmers, the security of being able to inflate the vest a bit is very reassuring.  Our teenage daughter happened to forget hers that day so she wore mine.  Yes, it was pink.  😉 But you can see Brian’s in the pic below.Man in snorkel gear and life vest

Challenges?

As I mentioned earlier, I am not a fan of the drawstring carrying strap on my bag.  However, I wouldn’t want to give up the mesh bag because it was perfect for rinsing and quick-drying!

In MY ideal world, I would have loved to have a wider, more comfortable carrying strap.  I have very narrow shoulders and drawstring type bags have always been a little uncomfortable for me to carry.

If Brian were carrying this case, I don’t think it would have been an issue for him at all.

Brief Mask Issues

We found the masks to be a little finicky at first but I feel this was more of an experience issue than a product issue.

For example, I had a hard time with mine sliding down at first but once I got it adjusted properly, I didn’t have any further mask issues.

Brian didn’t have any issues with the mask sliding.  However, he did struggle with water getting in a couple of times early on during his snorkeling experience.

Both issues seemed to be about getting the mask properly tightened, which we did figure out.  In my limited experience, snorkeling is a pretty unique activity.  You need to safely make sure everything is set correctly before you get into the water.  But, it’s impossible to test if it’s correct, or properly working…until you get into the water. Effectiveness comes with practice and we need more practice.

But, I’m pretty proud of us for our first time using full gear.  We just needed more time to get it right for us.  I feel like we have already learned so much and will put that toward our next experience.

We can’t wait to use the snorkel gear again and don’t worry… I’ll keep you posted.image of woman in snorkel gear

The Seavenger Quality

I’ll finish with a note about the quality.  Genuinely, It’s fantastic!  We both felt like the equipment was well manufactured and a great value.  I honestly couldn’t believe the retail price of the gear.  I have very sensitive skin and I had zero skin irritation after using the equipment. Before our trip, we were looking online for gear and we would have expected to pay twice their retail price.

I know that I have already disclosed to you that Seavenger sent us two sets to try out but at the end of the day, we would have certainly paid full price for this snorkel gear.
